Many people ask us what the difference is between brand Valtrex and the generic Valtrex. In the drug itself there is almost no difference; both Valtrex generic and official Valtrex use the Valacyclovir active ingredient. The brand name ‘Valtrex’ is owned by GlaxoSmithKline, so they are the only company that’s allowed to use the name. Other companies can only produce a generic drug based on the brand Valtrex if the patent on the official product has expired. You shouldn’t doubt between the official Valtrex and generic Valtrex, both work just as good and only the price is the big difference.

Valtrex with Valacyclovir was patented until Dec. 23 2009 and it’s now allowed to sell a generic version of this herpes antiviral drug.

Generic Valtrex side effects

Just like any other medicine, generic Valterx may have some unwanted side effects. Please keep in mind that every drug has side effects, and that these only occure rarely. Here is a list of the possible generic Valtrex side effects:

• Headache
• Hives
• Nausea
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Dizziness
• Swelling of tongue, throat, lips, face
• Breathing difficulties
• Closing of throat
• Abdominal pain

Even when the side effects occur, these should be very mild when you follow the prescribed dosage of the generic Valtrex. Don’t use an overdose or you’re bound to have more side effects after using the drug. Definitely don’t use Valtrex, generic Valtrex or any other Valacyclovir drug when pregnant. Pregnant women who do use generic Valtrex risk passing herpes to the unborn baby. It’s better not to take the medicine right after having drunk alcohol, the possible consequences are unkown.

Generic Valtrex and brand Valtrex are so-named pro-drugs. The medicine contains Valacyclovir, which is known to treat infections that were caused by herpes. The use of (generic) Valtrex is recommended when the first infection symptoms appear. These symptoms can be burning, tingling, blisters and other types of infections.
